What makes a tuxedo a tuxedo?

Before we define what a tuxedo is, let’s clear up what it isn’t. A tuxedo isn’t simply a black suit with a bow tie. That idea overlooks some important details and suggests all tuxedos are black and white, which isn’t true. Bow ties are the classic choice, but you have other options, too.

The main difference between suits and tuxedos is the use of silk satin on tuxedos, especially on the lapels. Suits usually use the same fabric for both the jacket and pants, with no special lapels or satin stripes on the legs. Most tuxedos also have silk-covered buttons, while suits have regular buttons.

A tuxedo transforms from the everyday suit crowd, so should you wear one? Only you can decide whether a tuxedo is the garment you need, but if one is expected, there will be clues or a very clear request. If the event is a gala or the dress code includes "black tie" or "formal attire," you'll need a tuxedo.

Tuxedo Colors

When you think of the iconic tux, you envision grayscale. Tradition commands respect, yet the modern and classic tuxedo refuse to be confined to just black and white.

Building on this tradition, midnight blue tuxedos have always been an acceptable alternative to black tuxedos because their dark blue fabric would appear blacker than true black under the glow of early electric lighting. Later, tropical climates necessitated the white dinner jacket—a warm-weather take on the tux. These tuxedo color ways have turned into formal wear staples and are often worn year-round.

You can also choose tuxedos in unique colors. Bright fabrics and patterns make a bold, festive statement at less formal events, like holiday parties. The most important thing is to know the dress code—a traditional black tie event still calls for a black tuxedo.
